FAQ

What exactly is a Rheumatologist?

A Rheumatologist is a physician who takes care of arthritis and autoimmune diseases. The spectrum of arthritis conditions is wide and different types of arthritis require different treatment and management regimens. There are also many different types of autoimmune diseases, and Rheumatologists specialize in diagnosis and management of these conditions as well. The training to become a Rheumatologist includes four years of medical school, 3 years of internal medicine training, and then two to three years of specialized Rheumatology training. Board certification is an important component of verifying competency in Rheumatology as well.

When is it appropriate to see a Rheumatologist?

If you have arthritis, tendinitis, or an autoimmune disease, a Rheumatologist can help diagnosis and treat such conditions.  If you have arthritis, tendinitis, or nerve entrapment pain that is not relieved by your current treatments, a Rheumatologist can help as well. Essentially, if you or your physician think you need to see a Rheumatologist, it is our pleasure to help in any way possible.

How does a Rheumatologist work with other health care professionals?

Treatment of any medical condition requires an integrative approach. As a specialist I will always work alongside your primary care physician to help optimize your care.  Frequently working with other healthcare providers such as physical therapists, other medical and surgical specialists, and other alternative healthcare providers is necessary and useful in the management of your medical condition. In such cases a team approach is useful, and a Rheumatologist fits in well in these situations also.
